Bio

Mariko Chang, founder of Mariko Chang Consulting, Inc., is a researcher and independent consultant specializing in external evaluation of grants that seek to increase faculty diversity and bring under-represented groups into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Chang is a national expert on the wealth gap, especially the gender and racial dimensions of wealth inequality, and is the author of Shortchanged: Why Women Have Less Wealth and What Can Be Done About It.

Chang has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Stanford University and was an Associate Professor of Sociology at Harvard University from 1998 to 2007, where she published work on occupational sex segregation across countries, the use of social networks for gathering financial information, and began her work on the gender wealth gap. She is also a founding member of The Closing the Women’s Wealth Gap Initiative and member of the Insight Center’s Experts of Color Network.
